Quick to listen.
Slow to speak.
Slow to anger.
Those are the key words from one of my favourite Bible verses. James talks about not showing favoritism, doing right, and controlling your reactions. Those words speak to me everyday; especially when things seem out of control.
Control is elusive. When we do not have it, we realize we want it.
“You asked questions. You didn’t just tell us what to do. You got to know us first, and started from there.”
This was a response I received from a group I was working with, after I asked what was most effective. From my perspective, the more I worried, the more control I felt I needed. As I took a step back each time, I realized I needed to learn with them. To ask, not tell.
